Wind and solar are going up on a million rooftops and fields. Spread out like they are hard to target physically. But every installation is remotely monitored and remotely adjustable, allowing adversaries to reach them from afar, with impunity. The threat is not one broken turbine or panel but thousands, impacting our energy grid at the same moment.
We have seen the pattern before. Edge devices were sold in the billions, on the assumption that only paying customers would have them, and they were contractually prohibited from tampering. Capable attackers then spent years taking them apart, until they understood those products better than the vendors did. Energy equipment rests on the same assumption.
But today, everyone can join in. AI turns patient expert work into something done cheaply and at volume by people with no expertise and every reason to look. Attention is about to become abundant, and it will land somewhere.
Our talk zeroes in on how we can collectively create visibility into the “blue space”; the digital terrain we are called upon to defend, and which we need to see more clearly than an attacker ever could. Our investigation into the wind and solar sector is presented as a first proof of concept, and an explicit invitation to accelerate visibility and resilience, together.
