Remco Spithoven studied Integral Safety Science (IVK) at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences in addition to his job at the Royal Netherlands Army. When he graduated, he found himself on the other side of the class at this university. In addition to his work as an IVK lecturer, he studied Public Administration, specialising in Governance of Safety at the VU Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD in the social sciences at the same university with his thesis ‘Keeping trouble at a safe distance. Unravelling the significance of ‘the fear of crime.’ After his PhD, he became a senior lecturer in IVK at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, where he set up a research line on safety perception and local safety at the Knowledge Analysis Social Safety lectorate. At Saxion University of Applied Sciences, he subsequently became a lecturer in Social Safety, where he and his team and partners focus on the research lines Cyber-resilient Citizens, Cyber-resilient Organisations, Digital Coexistence and Local Safety. Remco is also editor-in-chief of, among others, Tijdschrift voor Veiligheid and the Basic Book on Integral Safety.
