Now we’re putting software and network connections into cars and medical devices, we’ll have to patch vulnerabilites as they’re discovered. So will we force carmakers to maintain the software of cars they sold 15 or 20 years ago, or will we just throw cars away after five years, like laptops? Both industry and governments face real challenges as security, safety and sustainability come into conflict. Engineers will need tools to make software more maintainable, while safety regulators will need to adapt to continuous product improvement. This will all cost real money. The economics of security, safety and dependability are going to become ever more critical.
